Befriending the Mind: Half-Day Online Retreat with Jill Shepherd
Befriending the Mind
June 1, 2024
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
One common misperception of meditation is that it aims to stop thinking. However, the aim of insight meditation is to develop a more skillful relationship to every aspect of our experience, including our thoughts and emotions.
During this half-day workshop, we will explore ways to befriend the mind, to soften unhelpful mental habits such as the “inner critic,” and to cultivate helpful ones: states of heart and mind that lead to greater ease, happiness, and freedom. The afternoon will include a mix of short talks and guided meditations with time away from the screen for walking meditation or movement practice. There will also be a Q&R session for questions and reflections from the teacher.
Jill Shepherd began practicing insight meditation in Thailand in 1999, and since that time has lived and worked at several meditation centres and monasteries in the US, Australia, England, and Thailand. She spent seven years on staff at the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts, where she participated in several long retreats and Buddhist study programmes, as well as offering weekly meditation classes at a nearby prison. She is a graduate of the IMS / Spirit Rock teacher training program in the US, under the guidance of Joseph Goldstein and Gil Fronsdal.
She lives in Aotearoa / New Zealand and is the founding and guiding teacher of Auckland Insight. She teaches internationally, offering insight / vipassanā and brahmavihāra retreats and ongoing study and practice groups focused on bringing the dharma into daily life. She also leads courses and non-residential workshops exploring the relational practice of Insight Dialogue, as developed by Gregory Kramer and colleagues.
Jill is an independent meditation teacher and is not financially supported by any meditation centre or Buddhist organisation. She relies entirely on dāna for her livelihood.
