The Gradual Training with Leigh Brasington

The Gradual Training: A Half-Day Retreat with Leigh Brasington

Saturday, February 10, 2024
1:00 – 4:00 pm (Eastern)

“The Gradual Training” (anupubbasikkhā) is the name given to a series of practices that we should undertake in order to progress on the spiritual path. It appears to be the curriculum for the monks and nuns in the Buddha’s sangha. But these practices are also highly applicable to lay practitioners as well. And multiple of these practices will probably be familiar to anyone who has practiced extensively in any Buddhist tradition. We will take a look at each of the elements of the Gradual Training and explore how they fit into our spiritual practice.

Format:  Dharma talks, instruction (minimal), sitting practice, and opportunities for questions and response

Leigh Brasington has been practicing meditation since 1985 and is the senior American student of the late Ven. Ayya Khema. Leigh began assisting Ven. Ayya Khemma in 1994, and began teaching retreats on his own in 1997. He is also authorized to teach by Jack Kornfield. Leigh has taught the jhanas, along with multiple insight practices, at well over one hundred residential retreats throughout the United States and Europe. He is the author of the books, including Right Concentration: A Practical Guide to the Jhanas and Dependent Origination and Emptiness: Streams Of Dependently Arising Processes Interacting. Leigh has a forthcoming book on the Gradual Training that will be published this spring. Find more about Leigh’s teaching and schedule at
